Biography

Mireille Marcia Karman is an academic specializing in international relations and politics, with a focus on themes such as norms diffusion, deliberative democracy, human rights, Indonesian politics, and urban resilience. 

She completed her Bachelor of Social Science (S.Sos) with honors in International Relations at Universitas Indonesia in 2014, and went on to earn her Master’s degree (M.Litt) in International Political Theory from the University of St. Andrews in 2016. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Politics and International Studies at SOAS, University of London, where she began her studies in 2023. 

Throughout her career, Mireille has contributed to the field of political science and has received some awards, including the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) scholarship, granted by the Indonesian Ministry of Finance. Mireille’s professional experience includes her role as an Assistant Professor at Parahyangan Catholic University, Indonesia, where she is currently on leave. As an active researcher, Mireille has contributed to multiple research initiatives, primarily related to human rights, governance, and sustainable development. 

She has collaborated with institutions such as the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI). Notable projects include examining regional human rights implementation in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and exploring the concept of "Human Rights City" and deliberative democracy in Bandung, Indonesia.  

Mireille’s research output includes numerous publications in both academic and public forums. Her works, such as those in The Conversation, Asian Affairs: An American Review and Asian International Studies Review address contemporary issues like Indonesia's role in the G20 amid global power shifts, the impact of COVID-19 on Indonesia, and the implementation of human rights cities and deliberative democracy in Indonesia. 

Her engagement in conferences and workshops reflects her commitment to scholarly discourse, where she has presented on various topics related to Indonesian political dynamics.
